Awakening at dawn, I am driven with a hunger to find that day’s moments and emotions, surprises and disappointments. Photography lets me satisfy that hunger by allowing me to capture these slices of time. It then lets me share my views of the world around me with others. Watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and pen and ink, are some of the mediums I’ve explored, but photography is my current passion. If I cause you to take a second look, comment, or trigger an emotion, I’ve done my job. From pictures of the Hmong in Vietnam, and the headhunters of Taiwan, to native life in America, photography has been a lifelong fascination and is my current passion. Pictures taken with pin-hole cameras, 35 mm SLRs, 4x5 Speed Graflexs and digital cameras have all helped me explore this medium. I’ve studied at the Famous Photographer’s School, the Famous Artist’s School, and the Defense Information School where I learned photojournalism. I was one of three graduates from my class at the Defense Information School that was offered a position at Stars and Strips Pacific. I practiced photojournalism in the late ‘60s and was published both here and abroad. I am a 4th generation Florida cracker, born in Gainesville, and raised in the Wellswood neighborhood of Tampa. The Wellswood that existed when we moved in didn't look like the one of today. It was six streets of houses and miles of cow pasture and woods, this "young boy's" dream. I spent a lot of time playing in those cow pastures and woods, and fishing along the Hillsborough River. The experiences I had during those formative years gave me a deep love of nature and continue to influence my work as an artist today. The pressures of raising and providing for a family restricted the time I could devote to my art until recently. With that pressure reduced, I hope the public enjoys what I am now able to produce as much as I do. |
