You can almost hear this parent thinking, "What is it with
teenagers, a mohawk. Well, at least it isn't body piercing or
a tatoo. This picture was taken at the Venice Rookery in
Venice, Florida.

The picture "Parenthood", like most of the nesting great
blue heron photos, was taken at the Venice Rookery in
Venice, Florida. The grounds and the rookery are run by the
Venice Area Audobon Society and there is usually someone
there from the society with binoculars or a spotting scope,
sometimes both.

I saw "Ruffled Joe" in John Sargeant Park in Hillsborough
County, Florida and took his picture. Somewhere along the
line our family started calling the great blue herons, joe
birds, and the name stuck with us.

The "Sentry" was posted at the entrance to Cockroach Bay
Aquatic Preserve in Hillsborough County, Florida. One of the
theories on how the bay got its name is that when people
first looked out on this clear, shallow bay they saw lots of
horseshoe crabs, which might have looked like big
cockroaches to them.

I don't know who saw whom first, but this great blue heron
was nervous and tried to hide. He thought he was hidden
behind this tree but couldn't resist peeking out to see
where I was. I took the picture "Curious Great Blue Heron"
at one of my favorite sites, John Sargeant Park in
Hillsborough County, Florida.

On a breezy, chilly day in January I came upon the great
blue heron in the picture "That Wind Is Cold" at Honeymoon
State Park in Florida. Once called Hog Island, it became
Honeymoon Isle in 1939 after a developer built palm -
thatched bungalows for honeymooners on it.

With all the birds that nest at the  Venice Rookery in Venice,
Florida, it seems that you can always find adults with chick
in various stages of development. That's where I found the  
"Great Blue Heron with Chicks."

This great blue heron was fixing its nest at the Venice
Rookery in Venice, Florida. This is a great place to take
pictures. It seems that when one pair of birds finishes
rearing its young, another pair take over the nest to raise
theirs.

The south jetty on the pass between Venice Beach, and
Nokomis Beach, Florida always draws a large contingent of
fishermen. This great blue heron is no exception, but it
seemed to be waiting for someone else to catch its meal.
