| All of the pictures on this page were taken in La Boca, a barrio (neighborhood) of Buenos Aires, Argentina. La Boca is a portside neighborhood whose style reflects the influence of the europeans, mainly Italian, who migrated there between 1860 and 1910. It is said that the reason that the houses were painted with so many colors was because the residents couldn't afford the paint needed to protect their homes. But being close to the waterfront they were able to collect the bits of paint left over in cans used to paint the ships in the harbor. There was never enough of one color to cover a single home so multiple colors were used. One of the original birthplaces of tango, it is now a haven for artists. The street-museum "Caminito" is the ideal place to experience this art-rich neighborhood. |
