The picture of "White Pelicans Feeding" in a lake was
taken in Hillsborough County, Florida. The white pelican is
more buoyant than  the brown pelican and doesn't dive for
its food. They surround fish in shallow water, scooping
them into their pouches.

These two white pelicans were on a small fresh water
lake in Hillsborough County, Florida. They are part of a
flock of 20 to 30 that seem to winter in this lake because
of the abundant food to be found there.

White Pelicans  can weigh between 10 and 13 lbs. and
have the second greatest wingspan of any bird in North
America (9 to 9 1/2 feet.) Unlike the brown pelican, they
prefer inland fresh water lakes and ponds rather than
coastal salt waters.

This picture of the "White Pelican" reminded me of the
style made famous by Jean-Jacques Fougère Audubon, the
frenchman who later Americanized his name to John
James Audubon. Although his name is associated with bird
conservation, he was an avid hunter who once wrote: "I
call birds few when I shoot less than one hundred per day".

While this white pelican may be looking for lunch, they
normally fish in groups like the ones in the picture at the
top of the page. Pelican form a distinct genus and there is a
large debate over which other birds might be their closest
relatives;
