The whitenecked heron I found on Lake Iberá in the Esteros del Iberá was only one of the many birds that inhabit this spectacular ecosystem. It is the largest Argentine heron.
The original natives, the Guaraní lived, fished and hunted on the floating islands that make up this wetlands long before the Europeans settled here. Because of the clarity of the water the Guaraní called this area Iberá, which means brilliant waters.

"White Necked Heron #2" is one of a series of three pictures taken on Lake Iberá in the Esteros del Iberá . Located in the heart of Corrientes province, the Esteros del Iberá is the great marshlands of Argentina. It is second in size only to the Pantanal of Brazil. This nature reserve covers over 13,000 km2 of marshes, lakes and islands.
