you can no longer swim, water ski, jet ski, wade fish, or participate in any sport that requires you to put yourself into, on the edge of, or in rivers, or lakes in Florida. This is the unintended consequence created by declaring the alligator a protected species.
As long as an alligator is smaller than you, it thinks that you might want to eat it, so avoids you. Once it gets to be about the same size or larger than you, then it thinks of you as a meal. Ask any of the old time trappers.
When I was a kid in the 1950's and 1960's, all the alligators over about four feet were harvested for meat and hides. It was safe to swim in any river or lake. Unfortunately that is no longer the case and won't be until the large animals are harvested again.
